LETTER FROM CONGRESSWOMAN
NIKI TSONGAS
Dear Mr.
Poe:
Thank you
for contacting my office regarding the Postmaster General's request that Congress lift the Postal Service's
current six days per week mail delivery requirement. I appreciate your views and having the benefit of
your opinion.
The United
States Postal Service has been confronted with declining revenues in recent years that are attributed to
increased reliance on email by postal consumers in addition to increased transportation costs. While it is
uncertain if Congress would approve a reduction in delivery days at this time, the ultimate solution to the
USPS's solvency issues must balance the need for regular, reliable mail delivery service with financial
sustainability. I would also want to make sure that no solution unfairly reduces the wages and benefits
earned by our very capable Postal
Service employees. I will be closely
examining the cost cutting proposals that the USPS puts forward in the coming months in response to their very
serious budgetary challenges.
I appreciate
having the benefit of your thoughts on this matter and will certainly keep them in mind should this issue come
to a vote on the House floor.
Please do
not hesitate to contact my office in the future with questions or concerns. If you would like to see what
I've been doing in Washington DC, or to get my views on a certain issue, please visit my website at

Sincerely,
Niki Tsongas
