A House subcommittee has voted 8-1 to support H.R 5746, the bill introduced
July 15 by Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) to address the Postal Service's financial problems. If
passed, the bill would implement many of the Postal Regulatory Commission recommendations. It
now goes to the full House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
The NALC is now calling on all legislative activists to recruit
co-sponsors for H.R. 5746.

"NALC ACTIVIST ALERT"
HEADLINE WASHINGTON
July 30, 2010
Lawmakers in both chambers of the United States Congress marked up
their respective fiscal-year 2011 appropriations bills and mandated the
continuation of six-day mail delivery by the United States Postal
Service.
Despite the Postal Service’s penny-wise and pound-foolish efforts to
eliminate Saturday mail delivery service as a so-called solution to its
financial situation, Americans will continue to receive Saturday mail delivery
service.
Sen. Richard Durbin (IL), chairman of the Financial Services and
General Government Appropriations Subcommittee, acknowledged yesterday that
“[t]here are several steps that can be taken before we decide to go to five-day
service. There’s a question about whether they overpaid into their
pension system and we haven’t resolved that — and that’s a big amount of money.
It’s billions.”
Letter carriers from Illinois have continued to engage Sen. Durbin
on this issue through letters, phone calls and in-district visits.
For more information on this issue, please read the write-up
in
Bloomberg Business Week.
DUE TO THE CONVENTION THE WEEK OF AUGUST 8-13 THERE WILL BE NO UNION MEETING FOR THE
MONTH OF AUGUST.
PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF THIS.
